Welcome to falcon fever. I love all birds, but what I love even more is being able to watch them from the comfort of my couch. So, you can imagine my excitement when the Utah Division of Wildlife resources tweeted about a live video feed of a peregrine falcon and his offspring at the One Utah Center downtown.
Shout Out to Momma Falcon
The adult female falcon who birthed the babies in the video feed was recently hit by a car and killed. The male falcon is now caring for and feeding the fledglings.
Leaving the Nest
The youngsters are still developing and are expected to start learning to fly sometime in early June. They will grow to about the size of a crow and hunt other small birds mid-air.
An Astounding Comeback
Peregrine falcons were nearly wiped out from eastern North America in the mid-20th century due to pesticide poisoning. Significant recovery efforts have helped these fast flyers rebound and they can now be found in many large cities and coastal areas.
