Is Utah holding onto your (forgotten) cash? Millions of dollars of lost or unclaimed cash is turned over to the state each year. In 2022, Utah had about $77 million in unclaimed funds.
What is unclaimed property?
It’s the money you may not have claimed from an old job or a utility refund. It can also include dormant checking and savings accounts, overpayments, insurance checks, money orders, etc.
Is there a deadline and/or fee to claim property?
Nope and nope.
How long does it take?
It depends on the complexity of your claim, but for example, I filed a claim that was under $100 and received an email less than 30 minutes later saying it was approved and should arrive by mail in two to three weeks. Some claims, however, can take 90 days. Once your claim is filed, enter your claim ID to check the status online.
Will I need a notary?
Sometimes, depending on the dollar amount and the type of asset being claimed. If needed, your claim form will have a section for a notarized signature. In this case, you will need to both upload the form and mail the original form to complete your file.
