City Cast Salt Lake podcast host Ali Vallarta here. My New Year’s resolution is to visit all 511 parks in Salt Lake County, and I’m sharing stellar finds along the way.
The I-15 overpass at 900 South in Salt Lake City is convenient but not cute. Which is why Central 9th and Ballpark neighbors are coordinating to build a delightful pocket park right underneath. Say hello to Mead Park.
⚽ Underpass Futsal
The dream includes a small dog park, outdoor gym, and bike racks. But the pièce de résistance will be a futsal court. Futsal is a smaller, quicker version of soccer, played with fewer players on a hard court. National Soccer Hall of Famer Nick Rimando is leading that effort.
🌱 Upcoming Events
Help get the park prepped this Saturday, April 26 at a volunteer clean-up party from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Lunch will be provided.
On May 10, the Utah Museum of Fine Arts will install a pop-up: “Art at the Underpass.” Expect food trucks, activities, and a concert from noon to 8:30 p.m. They might even pour the futsal court in time!

🚧 Asking SLC for $$
Mead Park is a grassroots project. Frustrated with an overpass that cuts their neighborhood in two, residents conceptualized healing the divide and got to work with a massive cleanup in 2024. Now, the city is pitching in with $50,000, plus some new trees and street lamps. Ask for what you want!
