The federal funding freeze — and its subsequent blocking — last week caused a lot of confusion and concern for many who rely on government aid programs like SNAP. But Utahns should know that SNAP benefits are still available for those in need of food assistance.

What Are SNAP Benefits?

SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), commonly known as food stamps, help low-income households supplement their grocery costs. Benefits are loaded onto an EBT card, which works like a debit card, and can be used at authorized retailers. The amount you receive each month is based on your gross income and household size. SNAP food purchases are not charged sales tax.
