As a certified S.A.D girl, I’ve been doing my best to romanticize winter: participating in seasonal activities and eating comforting food. Nothing comforts me more than a killer loaf of bread, so here are some standout picks to try for every occasion.
If I’m headed to a housewarming or dinner party, a loaf from Table X Bread is always sure to impress. I suggest stopping at Picnic Cafe and grabbing one of the last remaining jars of Amour Spreads jam (RIP), and you’ve got the perfect gift for (me) anyone.
The honey rye at Village Baker is the perfect receptacle for your favorite sandwich fixings. It’s soft and hearty at the same time — what else could you ask for?
No one does sourdough like Mims. This microbakery blossomed out of the pandemic in 2020 and offers a consistently delicious loaf, batch after batch. Order online or grab a loaf at Loki Coffee or The Neighborhood Hive.
Leavity Bread, formerly Bread Riot Bakehouse, makes a flavorful laganes bread (which is a Greek flatbread) covered in black and white sesame seeds and fennel seeds. Visit their new bakery and cafe in the Ballpark neighborhood, or find their loaves at Liberty Heights Fresh and Caputo’s Market.
Quail Street Sourdough sells (and even ships!) starter, if you’re dipping your foot into bread making but aren’t ready to fully commit. What’s even better is you can use the starter to make pizza, baguettes, focaccia, crackers — the possibilities are endless!
