Salt Lake City isn’t the easiest environment for houseplants. Our high altitude, dry air, and winter heating make keeping plants a struggle. But here are a few plants that do best in Salt Lake City homes.
Snake Plant
If you’re brand new to keeping a houseplant, start with a snake plant. It’s drought-tolerant and can handle almost anything: low light, bright light, overwatering, underwatering.
Pothos
One of the most common houseplants, and for good reason. Pothos thrives in low humidity, tolerates almost any light level, grows fast, and trails beautifully.

ZZ Plant
These puppies are incredibly forgiving. I have a ZZ plant in a small pot with no drainage, and it’s still growing new leaves. ZZs can survive in very low light and rarely need watering since they store water in their thick stems.

Utah Pollinator Program
If you’re interested in delving into outdoor planting, Utah has a statewide initiative that helps cover costs for native, pollinator-friendly plants. Online applications are now open through April 15, but it does require a minimum project area of 900 square feet.
